Mary Scheier has died at 99
May 21st, 2007

She died on May 14, 2007 at the age of 99. A video tape on her & her husband, Four Hands, One Heart, introduced their work to the members of the WPA. I was amazed at how thin & light her works are. She is survived by her husband Edwin.

Laguna’s Pottery Shack
May 17th, 2007

I think I have a postcard of the place. It was opened in the 1930’s and closed in 2004. Its been replaced by a mixed use development called Old Pottery Place.

The Sargent
May 17th, 2007

My nickname for the bird that seems to be barking out orders to get up at the first signs of morning twilight (right now around 4:45am). I swear its on the gutter over my open windows. Since I’m a light sleeper, getting up to close the windows & trying to get back to sleep is difficult but I can’t think of sleeping with the windows closed when it so nice out.

Rocky River Library renovations
May 15th, 2007

An article talks about the doubling of items on display at the library which is located in a suburb of Cleveland Ohio. There are over 500 items on display including works by Schreckengost and Cowan.

Pottery leads to Human Evolution?
May 15th, 2007

I’m always finding interesting links on the web. A cool link is between Charles Darwin & the Wedgwood Pottery that I never knew. A Darwin family member was a friend to the Wedgwood family and eventually worked for the firm when a partner died. Eventually the children of Wedgwood & Darwin married and produced Charles.

Student Documentary on Western Stoneware
May 15th, 2007

Tonight was a free showing of “Western Stoneware: The Molding of a Company,” at Monmouth College, in Monmouth Illinois. It was being done as a student class project of Professor Chris Goble. The three students are Holly Butz, Traci Ratliff and Louise Murphy. For more information, see the article from the Register-Mail. It would have been interesting to see.

Maria Martinez pottery exhibit
May 14th, 2007

The Denver Post has an article on the Maria Martinez pottery in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, the article is quite informative. The museum is featuring some of its collection of 30 pieces. The exhibit is called “Maria: American Icon”, but unfortunately I couldn’t find a link on the museum’s website due to their search not working for me and I couldn’t find it in their events listing, their temporary exhibits or their permanent collection.

Door Pottery Article
May 10th, 2007

A favorite local pottery of mine is Door Pottery. Scott Draves presentation to the WPA was memorable for many things, not the least of members trying their hand at throwing pots. Its a shame my vase from that evening didn’t survive the kiln. The article from the Wisconsin State Journal is nice to see that they are covering this business and that it made it their web edition for more people to see.

Tiki pottery
May 5th, 2007

On a overcast day, you need something to brighten your day and Tiki items can’t do anything but put a smile on your face. Like TV lamps, its not the high end of pottery collecting, but this site & its links to others will provide many smiles & information on the potteries that produced Tiki ware.

2007 American Art Pottery Association Convention
May 5th, 2007

Nice article on the convention and some of the potteries in the area that contributed.
