Road trip to Michigan & Canada
September 27th, 2007

Just got back from a road trip to Sault Ste Marie, Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. The fall colors were great, but as usual, it was food that I enjoyed the most. The highlight of the trip was the Leg’s Inn in Cross Village Michigan. The building it is in is just cool. The place got its name from the stove legs used as decorations on the roof line. The food was great too! First time I’ve had Polish food, but I really enjoyed it.

The other unexpected surprise was a stop for lunch on the way back in Escanaba Michigan, the Stonehouse Restaurant. We went past the place on the way up & it looked pretty crowded, usually a good sign. It was early and we had a lot of miles to go, so we couldn’t stop for dinner. On the way back, we gave it a shot & I’m so glad. The special of the day was Maple Glazed Pork Tenderloin with pan roasted potatoes and mashed cauliflower. Kevin couldn’t finish it all (he got the last one). It reminded him of a dinner he would have gotten at Angelo’s (which recently closed). I was sort of in a burger mood, so not getting the special wasn’t too bad. The best part of the burger was getting the onion rings. I didn’t finish it all either, but came close. Didn’t need dinner that night.

If I’m in either place again, both of these places will be on my to-do list.

Black Mountain College
September 10th, 2007

An interesting college started in 1933 near Asheville, North Carolina. The college had a veritable who’s who list of famous painters, writers, philosophers and other areas of the arts who were associated with the school.

The period that the college seemed to reach its height in pottery, were unfortunately the waining days of the college. The 50’s brought Robert Turner, David Weinrib, Karen Karnes, Peter Voulkos, Warren MacKenzie and Daniel Rhodes as teachers and a pottery seminar brought Shoji Hamada, Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach. The school closed for good in 1957.

Marguerite Wildenhain is mentioned as giving a talk on pottery in the late 1940’s.

Reference to the WPA show & sale
September 4th, 2007

This blog I’ve linked to a couple of times and here is one more. At the show, the writer bought a Haeger piece. The WPA has some information on Haeger when it was featured at our 1998 show.

The writer also has some pictures of some local architecture. I always get a warm feeling whenever I see pictures of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacob’s House (#1). The warm feeling goes back to my feet being warmed by the floor when I worked for an interior designer who lived there. That detail, along with the early track lights & the use of plywood are what I remember of the place the most.

Art Nordstrom
September 4th, 2007

What an appropriate name for an art teacher? The Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center in Prescott Wisconsin will hold an exhibition called “The Drawings and Pottery of Art Nordstrom” through Sunday, October 7, 2007. I’ll have to try and get up to that part of the state & view some of his work.
